Terms of Use
Effective Date: October 7, 2026 | Last Updated: October 31, 2026
1. Agreement to Terms
By accessing or using the Learn Chinese mobile applications (available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store) or this website, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Use. If you do not agree to these terms, please discontinue using our software.
2. Permitted Use and License
We grant you a revocable, non-exclusive, non-transferable, limited license to download, install, and use our application solely for your personal, non-commercial Mandarin language learning purposes. You agree not to reverse engineer, decompile, redistribute, or scrape our vocabulary databases and audio recordings.
3. Educational Disclaimer
Learn Chinese is an independent study aid for learners preparing for the HSK (Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) exams and for general Mandarin literacy. Our vocabulary is based on the published HSK word lists, and our mock tests are original practice questions written for this app. We are not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by Chinese Testing International (CTI) or the Center for Language Education and Cooperation. Mock test scores are practice scores, not official results.
4. Free Features, Pro and Subscriptions
The app is free to download and has no ads. HSK 1 and HSK 2 are free in full, as is the first mock paper of every level in each format. The dictionary, search and word details with audio and stroke order, SRS review of words you have already learned, favorites, progress, backup, the placement test, the pinyin chart, tone practice, the focus timer, the Word of the Day widget and reminders are free at every level. Learn Chinese Pro unlocks the HSK 3 to 6 lessons, flashcards, quizzes, grammar, dialogues and graded stories, the level 3 to 6 items in the practice tools, and all 264 mock papers.
Pro is offered as three plans:
- Pro Monthly: US$3.99 per month, an auto-renewing subscription.
- Pro Yearly: US$14.99 per year, an auto-renewing subscription.
- Pro Lifetime: US$24.99, a one-time purchase. It does not renew and is never charged again.
The store shows the price in your local currency before you buy, and it may differ by country and include local taxes. There is no free trial.
- Payment: Payment is charged to your Apple ID account (App Store) or your Google Play account when you confirm the purchase. Apple or Google processes the payment; we never see or store your payment details.
- Automatic renewal: A monthly or yearly subscription renews automatically for the same period and at the same price unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends. If the price ever changes, the store tells you first, under its own rules.
- Managing and cancelling: You can manage or cancel a subscription at any time in your store account settings. On iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, tap your name, then Subscriptions. On Android, open the Google Play Store app, tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions and Subscriptions. After you cancel, Pro stays active until the end of the period you have paid for. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.
- Refunds: Purchases are processed by Apple or Google, so refunds are handled by them under their refund policies. For the App Store, request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com. For Google Play, request one from your Google Play order history. We cannot issue refunds ourselves.
- Lifetime purchase: Pro Lifetime is paid once and unlocks Pro with no end date for the Apple ID or Google account that bought it. If you have an active subscription when you buy Lifetime, cancel the subscription in your store settings so it does not renew.
- Restoring purchases: Pro is linked to your store account, not to an account with us. On a new device or after reinstalling, sign in to the store with the same Apple ID or Google account and tap Restore purchases on the Pro screen in the app. Purchases made on the App Store cannot be restored on Google Play, or the other way round. Restoring Pro does not restore study progress; use the backup option in the app for that.
- Store terms: Purchases are also governed by the terms of the store you buy from: for the App Store, Apple's Media Services Terms and Conditions and its standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement; for Google Play, the Google Play Terms of Service.
5. Intellectual Property
The Learn Chinese branding, logos, custom stroke order algorithms, audio compilations, software code, and editorial content are the exclusive intellectual property of Learn Chinese. Standard public domain Hanzi character definitions remain under their respective open cultural heritage licenses.
6. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, Learn Chinese and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, punitive, or consequential damages resulting from your use of or inability to use the service.
Study reminders and focus timer alerts depend on your device's notification, battery and Focus settings, so they may arrive late or not at all. They are study aids; do not rely on them for anything time-critical.
7. Modifications to the Service and Terms
We reserve the right to improve, update, or adjust features in our applications and these Terms of Use. Continued use of the service following published revisions confirms your acceptance of the updated terms.
8. Credits
Stroke order animations use data from Make Me a Hanzi, derived from fonts by Arphic Technology Co., Ltd. and used under the Arphic Public License. The converted data file used in the app is available here under the same license.
Many English word meanings in the app are adapted from CC-CEDICT, maintained by MDBG and licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0. Our adapted English meanings are shared under the same license.
